This past Saturday, our friend Tony Sabio was holding a fundraiser with a special guest. Tony was having a get together, I’m there! I contacted Ed Huebner who was interested in going. Awesome! We roll in the Arlington American Legion (which was the nicest Post I’ve seen). Tony’s wife and little girl was running the computer. Tony walked up and greeted me and I introduced Ed. Ed was instantly impressed with Tony and his lovely family.
Ed and I got some cold ones and some snacks and sat at a table. Right next to us was actor Dwight Schultz, the guest of honor! Schultz was a very important part of my youth as he portrayed H.M. “Howling Mad Murdock” on “The A-Team!” So, Ed and I do what we do best: left Schultz alone and talked about ourselves!
Then it was time to get the show on the road! There were some veteran support groups, then Tony spoke then Dwight spoke about the trouble he went through as a conservative actor! I whispered to Ed that we needed to book Schultz! Tony shocked the hell out of me though. Ed and I were sitting up front for leg room. He said that there was a great radio show host in the room and pointed to me. Now, remember what I always say: if two or more members of 75 Radio are at a function, it is now a 75 Radio sanctioned event! Those are the rules! I looked to my left and right and asked: “Where!?” I then spoke about 75 what we are all about. Someone asked if we were a podcast. I said we are on FCC radio and we can’t use the seven dirty words, but someone always does! Then, Tony and Schultz spoke back and forth, Schultz got a shirt and hat, Then Ed asked Tony if he could talk.
This is after Tony and Dwight finished speaking and people were getting up to leave. Ed asked Tony to say a couple of words. I thought this should be interesting. Ed is a good speaker, Ed is not a whack job like me, so I was wondering where he was going. Ed said we pay so much for coffee and other things that it was worth it to sacrifice it for Tony. After that great speech I got up and spoke to Tony who introduced me to Dwight! I told Dwight that my favorite role was when he filled in as guest host for “The Savage Nation!” Schultz was surprised! We had a great conversation! We talked radio and not why the A-Team was special operators in the Army with automatic weapons and couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn! Schultz is a fan of radio! An actor I loved as a kid, conservative, and a fan of radio! Dwight was my new best friend! He also agreed to do an interview on 75 Radio! I wanted to do it face to face and since my place is literally a basement, I enlisted Tony’s house! Then afterwards I met another friend of Tony’s: Barry Donadio. A native New Yorker, former GI and lawman and media personality! A better version of me! I met other attendees who were interested in 75 Radio. Of course I mentioned Walter but I also mentioned our Spokesmodel for radio Danila! I showed the picture of Dani wiping down a bathroom sink in an evening gown and said I made her wipe down tbe sink! As they question the photo and its authenticity Ed simply replied: “He did.” Again, this is 75 Radio!
That night Ed and I did the show together at the Electric Palm Restaurant in Woodbridge, VA as a band he liked was performing. And once again “The Peter Grant of Radio” Ed Huebner did what he did best and got us in the dining room where we interviewed Ray Sinom, a patriotic artist. We could have let him have the whole hour but we wanted to talk about our amazing afternoon!
I can’t tell you what it means when the childhood hero is bigger and better than the person you watched on the screen! I am the happiest man in tbe world because I surround myself with the greatest people in the world!
