Long Island used to be a refuge for the middle class that worked in and around New York City, escaping the taxes, regulations, crime, grime, and slime of the City of New York. Residents of Long Island were able to afford houses, schools were decent, crime was low, and taxes were kept in check. Now Long Island is going the way of New York City with crime, taxes, spending and the lowering of the quality of life that the people of Long Island were yearning for.
